The concept was based on the historical events of the American / Soviet Union Red Scare (1947-1957). During this time the Amerian public feared the spead of Communsim into the American Democracy. This fear was exaggerated further by media outlets and political figures in order to suppress the communist threat.
The chess set translates the struggle of the American understanding of Communism in the 1950's. The King and Queen on the Communist side are Karl Marx, the creator of Communism, and Nikita Khrushchev, former Soviet Union leader. The other Soviet Union pieces include the imagery and ideals that were portrayed to the american public of the Communist party, such as, nuclear devices, explosives, and soliers.
On the opposing side stands the American King and Queen. The king being Uncle Sam, the tradtional American icon, and the Queen Senator Joseph McCarthy, creator of McCarthyism. Other American pieces include all forms of media used to induce the American public into an exaggerated form of fear of the Communist persuasion.
The graphic design, typographical treatment, and texture were designed specifically to fit the time period, however the rules remain the same.
